Mustio to Host Local Mental Health Symposium on April 13
MOON TWP. – Rep. Mark Mustio (R-Allegheny) encourages residents of the 44th Legislative District to attend his Mental Health Symposium, slated for Friday, April 13, Pittsburgh Technical College, 1111 McKee Road, Oakdale, PA 15071. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and the speaker series will begin at 9:15 a.m.

“With senseless shootings, domestic abuse and other mental health issues at the forefront of concern across the nation, I want to bring our community together to hear from regional and state mental health experts,” said Mustio. “We’re going to have an open and frank discussion about a wide variety of mental health issues impacting parents, family members, school administrators, teachers, caregivers and emergency responders. The good news is that our community already has valuable resources and support available, and we’re going to talk about them during this symposium.”

Some of the speakers and organizations participating in the Mental Health Symposium will include Candy Vazquez, Trainor, Allegheny Health Choices; Jason Snyder, Special Assistant to the Secretary, Department of Human Services - Centers of Excellence; Christine Michaels, CEO, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Keystone Pennsylvania; Shannon Fagan, MS, Director, Pennsylvania Bureau of Children’s Behavioral Health Services; and Mary Ellen Trenga, MA, LPC, ACS – Clinical Coordinator, The Watson Institute.

Specific topics of discussion will include:
  • Anxiety, mental health and screening, Student Assistant Programs (SAP) and the transition to college.

  • Holistic and integrated approaches to substance abuse, mental health and physical health.

  • Emotional well-being of children and ensuring children with emotional disorders learn, work and thrive in their communities.

  • Assisting families and individuals through support groups, HelpLines, education and advocacy.

  • Mental health care first aid and future training of first responders.

The Mental Health Symposium will conclude around 3 p.m., following the Speakers’ Panel Question and Answer Session.

There is no cost to attend and Pittsburgh Technical College will be providing complimentary lunch.
